Promoting Healthy Masculinity

Boys are sent messages about what it means to be a "real man" from the time they are born through adulthood.  They are taught that a man should not openly show emotions and must be tough and brave while showing no weakness.  These messages influence how boys think, feel, and interact with the world.  This presentation explores the origins of these messages and the negative impact they have on the emotional development of boys.  Participants will learn how to be aware of these messages and what roles they can play in fostering healthy masculinity with the population they serve.

Fostering Empathy in Children

Empathy is defined as the ability to understand and share the feelings of others.  There are some children who have the ability to empathize with others and develop healthy connections in their relationships.  What about those who have trouble understanding the feelings of others?  What can be done to better help them learn how to use to empathy?  Participants will learn effective and creative ways to enhance the level of empathy of children that they serve.

After the Storm: Processing After an Outburst

A child's outburst can create a very tense environment for those involved.  Once the child has calmed and is done acting out, the next step can be crucial in determining future behavior.  As a parent or a provider, there are choices that can be made "after the storm" that will help turn it into a learning moment for the child.  Participants of this presentation will learn how to process with a child after an outburst in an effort to turn a hostile situation into a positive one.
